Palo Alto is a city in the southeastern corner of San Mateo County, California, with portions extending into adjacent Santa Clara County. Palo Alto is known as the birthplace of Silicon Valley and home to Stanford University.

History

Palo Alto's history dates back to 1769 when Gaspar de Portolà noted an Ohlone settlement along San Francisquito Creek while exploring the San Francisco Peninsula for the Spanish crown. The city was officially incorporated in 1894 and named after a coastal redwood tree called El Palo Alto. Palo Alto grew quickly starting in the 1950s due to the success of Stanford Research Park and the many technology companies that located there, including Hewlett-Packard and Varian Associates.
