Palm Springs is a desert resort city in Riverside County, California, United States, within the Coachella Valley. It had a population of 44,552 as of the 2010 census, up from 42,807 at the 2000 census.

History

Palm Springs has a rich history dating back to prehistoric times when Native Americans settled in the area. The Cahuilla tribe were early inhabitants of the region. In 1853, the United States acquired the land from Mexico with the Gadsden Purchase. In the late 19th century, the Southern Pacific Railroad established a rail station in Palm Springs, helping it grow into a town. Hollywood stars and celebrities began vacationing there in the 1920s, drawn by the warm climate and seclusion. During World War II it also served as a staging area for Patton's training exercises.

Palm Springs is located in the Sonoran Desert in the Coachella Valley, with elevations ranging from 367 feet to over 6,000 feet. It has a hot desert climate, with average high temperatures over 100°F in the summer. The winters are mild with daytime highs between 70-80°F. Palm Springs gets very little rain, averaging just 5 inches per year.

As of the 2020 census, Palm Springs had a population of 48,375. The racial makeup of Palm Springs was 70.1% White, 5.9% African American, 1.6% Native American, 8.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 10.2% from other races, and 3.8% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino residents of any race made up 33.1% of the population.
