History

Pacifica has a long history going back to pre-colonial times when the Ohlone people inhabited the coastal lands. In 1769, the Spanish arrived and established missionary outposts in the area. Ranchos were later developed for agriculture and livestock grazing. In 1846, California came under American control.

In the late 1800s, a small fishing village known as Spanishtown formed near today's Rockaway Beach neighborhood. The Ocean Shore Railroad was built along the coast in 1905, connecting San Francisco to Santa Cruz. This led to the first housing developments being built in future Pacifica neighborhoods like Edgemar and Pacific Manor.

Significant growth occurred post-WWII with expansion of Highway 1 and suburbanization. The city officially incorporated in 1957 and adopted the name "Pacifica" referring to its location along the Pacific coast.
