Oildale is a census-designated place (CDP) in Kern County, California, United States. It is located north of Bakersfield, and had a population of 32,684 at the 2010 census, up from 27,885 at the 2000 census. Oildale is located 5.5 miles north of downtown Bakersfield.

Oildale originated in the late 19th century as a small farming settlement. In the early 1900s oil was discovered in the area which led to rapid growth and the establishment of Standard Oil facilities. The town's name is derived from its origins as an oil-producing region.

Today, Oildale is largely a residential community and suburb of Bakersfield. Key aspects of the local economy include oil production, healthcare, retail, and agriculture.

History

Oildale was founded in 1899 with the discovery of oil by Thomas Means. On July 25, 1899 the fourth oil well ever drilled in California came in one-half mile west of Oildale. The town grew rapidly in the early 1900s as oil workers and businesses moved into the area. By 1920, Oildale had become a town of 5,000 people.

Standard Oil Company put down roots in Oildale in the late 1890s and opened an office following major oil strikes. The company eventually built housing, a library, parks and other facilities for its workers. Oildale's first high school was built in 1919.

Oildale was incorporated as a city in 1911. In July 1957 the city of Oildale merged with nearby Bakersfield and became part of the city limits. However, the Oildale area maintained a distinct identity and today is an unincorporated census-designated place.
