Oceanside is a coastal city located in northern San Diego County, California. As of the 2020 census, Oceanside had a population of 175,742 residents, making it the third-largest city in San Diego County after San Diego and Chula Vista. Oceanside is known for its beaches, surf culture, and many attractions that draw tourists year-round.

History

The original inhabitants of the Oceanside area were the Luiseño Indians. In 1769, Spanish explorers arrived and established Mission San Luis Rey. In the 1880s, Andrew Jackson Myers purchased a tract of land that would become downtown Oceanside. The town was established in 1883 and later incorporated as a city in 1888. For many years, Oceanside was a sleepy beach town known as a hub for citrus production. The establishment of Camp Pendleton Marine Corps base in 1942 led to major growth for Oceanside. Today it is a thriving coastal community with a diverse economy and many vibrant neighborhoods.

Population and Demographics

According to the 2020 census, Oceanside has a population of 175,742 residents. It is the 16th largest city in California. The racial makeup of Oceanside is 59.7% White, 7.4% African American, 1.2% Native American, 6.1% Asian, 0.8% Pacific Islander, 20.0% from other races, and 4.9% from two or more races. Oceanside has a large Hispanic or Latino population, making up 35.4% of residents.

The median age in Oceanside is 33.5 years old. 24.3% of the population is under age 18 and 12.5% is age 65 or older. There are 62,982 households in the city, with an average household size of 3.09 people.

Oceanside experienced rapid population growth throughout the 20th century. In 1970, the population was only 45,976 but nearly quadrupled over the next fifty years. Although growth has slowed somewhat in recent decades, Oceanside continues to grow and develop new housing and businesses to keep pace.

Oceanside Pier

The Oceanside Pier is one of the most iconic landmarks in the city. The wooden pier extends 1,942 feet over the Pacific Ocean. The pier was first built in 1888 but has been damaged and rebuilt multiple times over the years due to storms and fires. The current pier was reconstructed in the 1980s. It includes a bait shop, restaurant, and areas for fishing. The Oceanside Pier is a popular spot for beachgoers, surfers and tourists.

Mission San Luis Rey de Francia

Founded in 1798, Mission San Luis Rey de Francia is an historic Spanish mission located in northern Oceanside. It was the 18th mission built in California and is often called the “King of Missions.” The sprawling adobe complex has been rebuilt and restored over the years. Visitors can take a self-guided tour to view the church, courtyard, museum exhibits and more at this National Historic Landmark.

Oceanside Beach

With over 3 miles of sandy beaches, Oceanside is a top destination for swimming, surfing, beachcombing and sunbathing. The warm waters of the Pacific and the city's famous wooden pier draw beachgoers year round. Popular beach activities include surfing, bodyboarding, kayaking, and fishing. Lifeguard stations ensure the safety of visitors swimming in the ocean.

Oceanside Harbor

Oceanside Harbor provides a protected harbor with boat slips, shops, restaurants and stunning views of the Pacific Ocean. Located just south of the pier, the harbor has nearly 1,000 boat slips, many of which are reserved for commercial fishing boats. Harbor attractions include boat rentals, boat tours, and an Junior Seau Pier Amphitheater. There is also a resort hotel located right on the harbor.
