Some key facts about Novato:

History

The Coast Miwok Native Americans were the first known inhabitants of the area that is now Novato. In 1839, the Mexican government granted the 8,876 acres Rancho Novato to Fernando Feliz. Rancho Novato remained intact until 1880, when land from portions of the ranch were sold off to various settlers.

In 1839, Scottish settler James Black and his son moved to Rancho Nicasio and began raising cattle. The Blacks eventually became the first landowners in Novato in 1856 when they were granted land patents for the namesake Rancho Novato.

The town of Novato was formally established in 1857. It was originally called "Black's Station" after founders James and Samuel Black. The town's name was later changed to "Novato" in honor of St. Novatus. Railroad and mining magnate Charles Crocker's Southern Pacific Railroad completed its connection from San Rafael to Sonoma County through Novato in 1879, sparking northern Novato's economic growth. A major rail yard was built in Novato in 1884 to serve as a railroad terminus for local warehouses and surrounding agricultural enterprises. Warehouse and industrial activities dominated Novato into the early 20th century.

World War II accelerated the growth of Novato as the area attracted defense industries. Military bases in the region expanded, and Marin County's population grew more than 50% between 1940 and 1950. Highway 101 was constructed through Novato in 1952, further bolstering population growth. Novato continued to grow into a residential community as the post-war boom established Novato as a suburb of San Francisco and the Bay Area.

Novato was finally incorporated as a city in 1960. The city's population rapidly expanded during the 1960s and 1970s. Major civic improvements and city services were introduced during this period, including the establishment of the Novato Fire District, the opening of the Novato Community Hospital, and the construction of the Civic Center complex.
