Murrieta is a city located in southwestern Riverside County, California. With a population of 113,326 as of 2020, Murrieta is one of the largest cities in Riverside County and has experienced rapid growth over the past few decades.

History of Murrieta[1]

The Murrieta area was originally inhabited by the Luiseño Indians for hundreds of years. In the early 19th century, the Alamos rancho land grant encompassed the area. In 1873, Juan Murrieta, a Spanish soldier, purchased part of the rancho and founded a sheep ranch here. A settlement grew around the ranch which became known as Murrieta.

In 1884 the California Southern Railroad built a line through Murrieta connecting it with cities to the north and south. This brought numerous settlers and the town incorporated in 1991. The establishment of Camp Haan and the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1941 led to further economic development in Murrieta. After World War II, Murrieta grew rapidly as housing developments were built and businesses and residents moved to the suburban community.
