Prior to the arrival of European settlers, the Ohlone people lived in the area for thousands of years. In 1769, the first European land exploration of Alta California, the Spanish Portolà expedition led by Gaspar de Portolà, passed through the area. In 1851, Guiseppe Castro constructed the first building in the area, the adobe Casa Grande, later Castrito's. In the same year, Hispanics settlers established Rancho Pastoria de las Borregas, named for the abundance of wild overflow. After California gained statehood in 1850, major settlement began. Mountain View Station was the first stagecoach stop on the route between San Francisco and San Jose, including the Butterfield Overland Mail. Incorporation of Mountain View took place in 1902.
