Moorpark is a city in Ventura County, California. As of the 2020 census, the population was 38,830. Moorpark was founded in 1900 and incorporated as a city in 1983. The city gets its name from the Moorpark apricot, which used to grow in abundance in the area.

Population

According to the Wikipedia page for Moorpark, the 2020 census recorded a population of 38,830 for the city. The population density was 2,244.5 people per square mile. The racial makeup of Moorpark was 28,117 (72.4%) White, 533 (1.4%) African American, 234 (0.6%) Native American, 3,219 (8.3%) Asian, 34 (0.1%) Pacific Islander, 5,115 (13.2%) from other races, and 1,578 (4.1%) from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino residents of any race were 11,849 persons (30.5%).

History

The original inhabitants of the Moorpark area were the Chumash people. In the late 18th century, the land that would become Moorpark was occupied by Mission San Buenaventura and Mission San Fernando Rey. The Mexican land grant Rancho Simi was issued to Patricio Pico and Robert Clappe in 1842 followed by Rancho Las Posas in 1844. Some of Moorpark's early homesteaders and ranchers included the Ralphael F. Gates family, Daniel and Manuella Jung, Simon M. Maheras, Henri Leseure, Henry Cleyburg, and the Poindexter brothers. The establishment of Moorpark College in the 1900s spurred residential development in the area.
