Montclair is a city in San Bernardino County, California with a population of around 39,000 residents as of 2020. Montclair gets its name from the many eucalyptus trees planted in the area in the late 19th century by settlers from Ontario, Canada, which reminded them of their home region of Montclair. The city was incorporated in 1956 and has grown into a diverse suburban community.

History

The San Bernardino valley where Montclair sits had originally been inhabited by the Serrano people for hundreds of years. In 1848, Mexico ceded California to the United States after the Mexican-American War. Americans began settling in the area throughout the second half of the 19th century, establishing farms and cattle ranches.

The downtown area of Montclair was initially established in 1882 by Daniel M. Berry. In 1887, the Chaffey brothers, pioneers of California irrigation, purchased the land and planted numerous fruit orchards. They laid out plans for a town center and residential areas. The name "Monte Vista" was originally chosen in 1888, but was changed to Montclair ten years later due to another California city already using that name. The establishment of the Pacific Electric Railway line at the turn of the century connected Montclair with the growing city of Los Angeles and provided transportation for agricultural products. In 1956, Montclair incorporated as an independent city breaking off from neighboring Ontario. The 1960s saw major suburban residential development as the population boomed.
