History of Modesto

Modesto was founded in 1870 and was originally meant to be named Ralston after financier William C. Ralston. Ralston declined the honor and instead asked for the town to be named Modesto after the Spanish word for "modest".

Modesto's early economy was fueled by agriculture and the railroad industry. The city incorporated in 1884 and continued to grow as an agricultural hub and important railroad stop between San Francisco and Los Angeles. Modesto's population boomed after World War II as housing developments were constructed to accommodate families moving to the Central Valley.

Today, Modesto remains an agricultural center but also has a diversified economy including healthcare, education, manufacturing, and retail sectors. The city is home to Modesto Junior College founded in 1921 which is the oldest community college in California.
