History

The area now known as La Mission Viejo was originally home to the Acjachemen Native Americans. The first Europeans arrived in the late 18th century when Spanish missionaries established the Mission San Juan Capistrano nearby. The La Paz land grant encompassed most of what is now La Mission Viejo and was granted to Juan Forster in 1845 by the Mexican governor of California. Forster raised cattle and sheep on the land. After California became a state, Forster lost claim to the land due to lack of usage under the Land Act of 1851.

In the 1960s, the Mission Viejo Company purchased 10,000 acres of the former Rancho Mission Viejo land grant and began developing master-planned communities. La Mission Viejo was incorporated as a city in 1988. The city takes its name from Rancho La Mision Vieja, a predecessor of Rancho Mission Viejo.
