History

The original inhabitants of the Menifee area were the Luiseño people. Europeans first visited the area in the early 19th century. The community of Menifee was established in the late 19th century and named after Luther Menifee Wilson, who was a key figure in the early development of the area.

Menifee incorporated as a city in 2008. Prior to incorporation, the communities in the Menifee area were part of unincorporated Riverside County. With cityhood, Menifee was able to gain more local control over planning, zoning, and development.
