History of Martinez

The history of Martinez dates back over 10,000 years when it was inhabited by Native American tribes including the Muwekma Ohlone. In 1824, Ignacio Martinez, commandant of the San Francisco Presidio, was granted rights over the land where the city stands today. His adobe served as the center of a Rancho. After California statehood, the town of Martinez grew quickly as a trading hub and ferry port. The city incorporated in 1876. Over the years, Martinez was home to major industries like steel production and oil refining. Today, it retains much of its historic small-town charm while also serving as a suburban community in the East Bay metropolitan area.
