History of Los Banos

The first inhabitants of the Los Banos area were the Northern Valley Yokuts tribe. The tribe occupied the area near the confluence of Los Banos Creek and the San Joaquin River. In the late 19th century, farmers and ranchers began settling in the Los Banos area to take advantage of fertile farmland and abundant water from local creeks. By 1907, Los Banos had a post office and a hotel. The city was officially incorporated on January 6, 1907. Agriculture and the supporting agricultural services industry continues to be the base of Los Banos' economy today.
