History

The name Lompoc comes from the Purisimeño language term "Lum Poc", meaning "stagnant waters" or "lagoon". The area was originally inhabited by the Chumash people. In 1787, the La Purisima Mission was established just outside modern day Lompoc. The Lompoc Valley began to be settled by Americans in the late 1800s, and Lompoc was incorporated as a town in 1888. In 1891, Lompoc became the westernmost U.S. town with electricity when entrepreneur W.W. Broughton built an electric power plant. Agriculture and flower seed production came to dominate the economy in the early 1900s. Nearby Vandenberg Air Force Base and federal prisons also contributed to Lompoc's growth in the 20th century.
