Livermore is a city in Alameda County in California's San Francisco Bay Area. As of the 2020 census, Livermore had a population of 93,109 residents, making it the eleventh largest city in the Bay Area and the 58th largest city in California. Livermore is located approximately 45 miles east of San Francisco.

History

Livermore was founded by William Mendenhall and named after Robert Livermore, his friend and a local rancher who settled in the area in the 1840s. Livermore was originally part of the Rancho Las Positas land grant. The city was officially incorporated in 1876. Livermore experienced significant growth in the 1950s and 1960s as the nearby Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory opened and expanded. Today, Livermore is known for its wineries, its role in scientific research and innovation, and its growing arts and entertainment scene.

According to the 2020 census, Livermore had a population of 93,109 residents. This makes Livermore the 11th largest city in the Bay Area and the 58th largest in California. The racial makeup of Livermore was 62.6% White, 2.5% Black or African American, 0.8% Native American, 26.2% Asian, 0.4% Pacific Islander, and 3.6% from two or more races. Approximately 24.4% of residents identified as Hispanic or Latino of any race.

The median age in Livermore is 41.8 years old. 22.9% of residents are under 18 years old, while 16.1% are over 65 years old. There are an average of 2.8 people per household. Approximately 61.6% of residents own their homes, while 38.4% rent.

Livermore has grown rapidly in recent decades. In 1980, Livermore had a population of 44,100 residents. By 1990, it had grown to 73,345 residents. The population doubled to more than 90,000 residents by 2010.
