Laguna Niguel is a suburban city located in southern Orange County, California. With a population of over 64,000 as of 2020, it is one of the larger cities in Orange County.

History

Laguna Niguel has a relatively short history compared to other cities in California. The area was originally part of the Mexican land grants Rancho Niguel and Rancho Mission Viejo. In 1959, the Laguna Niguel Corporation bought the Rancho Niguel land to develop a planned community. Laguna Niguel was officially incorporated as a city in 1989. According to the 2020 US Census, Laguna Niguel had a population of 64,748. The racial makeup of the city was 66.8% White, 5.2% Asian, 1.6% African American, 0.4% Native American, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 19.4% from other races, and 6.5% from two or more races. Hispanics or Latinos of any race made up 32.5% of the population. The Census Bureau also estimated there were 23,994 households and an average household size of 2.57 people. About 29.8% of households had children under 18 years old.
