La Quinta is a city located in central Riverside County, California. As of the 2020 census, La Quinta had a population of 41,471 residents, making it the ninth largest city in Riverside County.

History

La Quinta was first developed in 1926 by agricultural land developer Walter H. Morgan. The name La Quinta came from the Spanish term meaning "the fifth" and was used by Morgan to refer to the fifth residential development undertaken by his company. In the 1930s La Quinta became a popular retreat for Hollywood stars looking to escape Los Angeles. Growth remained slow until the 1970s and 80s when La Quinta started to expand into a mid-sized residential community. La Quinta incorporated as a city in 1982.

La Quinta Museum

The La Quinta Museum is located in the historic La Quinta Village and features exhibits on the art, history, culture and architecture of La Quinta and the surrounding Coachella Valley. Exhibits include Native American artifacts, period rooms showing early home interiors, and rotating art exhibits. The museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10am to 4pm.

Bear Creek Trail

Bear Creek Trail is a 6.4 mile hiking and biking trail that follows the natural desert landscape along Bear Creek. The trail features views of native plants and occasional wildlife sightings. There are multiple access points along the trail. Bear Creek Trail is popular for walking, running, biking, and horseback riding.

Indian Canyons

The Indian Canyons feature a number of canyons and hiking trails just south of Palm Springs on tribal land owned by the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians.
