According to Wikipedia, La Presa means "the farm" or "the ranch" in Spanish. The area was originally part of Rancho El Cajon land grant and was largely used for cattle ranching and farming in the late 1800s. La Presa began to develop into a more populated community in the 1950s and 1960s.

Population

As mentioned above, La Presa had a population of 34,169 at the 2020 census. This was a slight increase from 33,883 at the 2010 census. La Presa is considered part of the broader San Diego metropolitan area which had an estimated population of over 3.3 million as of 2018 according to Census Bureau data.

La Presa has grown at a modest pace over the past few decades. It saw more significant population growth between 1970 and 1990 when the population doubled from around 7,000 to over 14,000. Population growth slowed in the 1990s and 2000s as the community became built out.

Approximately 48% of residents are Hispanic/Latino compared to 34% for the entire county. Asians make up around 11% of the La Presa population versus just under 11% countywide.

History

As mentioned earlier, La Presa has its origins as part of the Rancho El Cajon Mexican land grant in the early 19th century after California became part of Mexico. The rancho originally encompassed over 35,000 acres and was used mainly for cattle ranching and agricultural purposes.

In 1853, part of the rancho was acquired by Martin and Anna Cory who established a farmstead and named it La Presa, meaning "the farm" or "the ranch" in Spanish. La Presa was located along the main road connecting San Diego and Fort Yuma in what is now central La Presa.

For many decades, La Presa remained a small, rural farming community. Things began to change in the 1950s and 1960s as suburban-style housing developments were constructed to accommodate San Diego's growing population. Many family farms were sold and subdivided for residential neighborhoods. La Presa also became home to several mobile home parks during this time.

By 1970, La Presa's population had grown to around 7,000 residents. Further residential growth occurred over the next several decades turning La Presa into a suburban bedroom community within the San Diego metro area.
