La Mirada is a city in southeast Los Angeles County, California with a population of around 50,000 residents. The city is located around 20 miles southeast of downtown Los Angeles.

History

The area where La Mirada is located was originally home to the Gabrielino Native American tribe. The first European settlers arrived in the early 1800s when the Spanish were granted land in the area. The name La Mirada comes from a property called Ranchito la Mirada, Spanish for "little farm with a view." The city was officially incorporated in 1960.

• 1834 - The original Spanish land grant for Rancho Los Coyotes was made in the area.
• 1880s - Andrew McNally, a printer and publisher from Chicago purchased 5,000 acres in the area to raise cattle and orchards.
