History

The Cahuilla people are the native inhabitants of the Indio area. In 1876, the Southern Pacific Railroad established a railroad station near a railroad bridge crossing the Whitewater River, which provided a connection between the cities of Yuma, Arizona and Los Angeles. The town site was originally named Indian Wells, but was later changed to Indio by the Southern Pacific Railroad in 1880. The name is Spanish for Indian.

Indio began as a railroad town and the economy was based on agriculture, particularly dates and citrus fruits. The original town site was about one square mile in size. In the early 20th century, the city continued to grow as a farming community and resort area due to its warm, dry climate. After World War II, the population began to rapidly expand.

Today, some major contributors to the local economy include agriculture, tourism, retail, light industry, and commerce. Indio is also known for its special events and festivals.
