In the 1840s, the land was acquired by the San Bernardino LDS colony who used it mainly for grazing cattle. Mormon settlers began arriving in the Hemet area in the late 1800s, attracted by the warm climate and fertile soil.

Hemet was incorporated as a city in January 1910. The city experienced growth as an agricultural community known for products like citrus, apricots, milk, and eggs. In the 1950s-60s, Hemet saw an influx of retirees and second homeowners drawn to the warm winters.

Today, Hemet is a hub of economic and residential activity in the San Jacinto Valley. Its historic downtown, murals, and annual events highlight the community's pride in its unique heritage.
