Hawthorne is a city in southwestern Los Angeles County, California. Located near the Los Angeles International Airport, Hawthorne has a population of over 84,000 residents, making it the 87th largest city in California.

History of Hawthorne

The city of Hawthorne has a rich history dating back to the early 1900s. Hawthorne was founded in 1905 and named after author Nathaniel Hawthorne. The city was incorporated in 1922 with a population of under 2,000 residents.

In the 1920s, Hawthorne became an aviation hub when the Northrop Corporation opened aircraft assembly facilities in the city. This brought jobs and population growth to the area. During World War II, Northrop greatly expanded their facilities in Hawthorne to produce aircraft for the military. The company continued operations in Hawthorne after the war, producing commercial aircraft.

In the 1950s-60s, Hawthorne saw a period of rapid residential development and population growth. By 1970, the population had reached over 53,000. In the following decades, Hawthorne has continued to grow and evolve into a diverse suburban community within the Los Angeles metropolitan area.
