History

The area that is now Glendale was once inhabited by the Tongva people. The first European settlement began in the early 1800s when Mexican farmers were given land grants. The city was officially incorporated in 1906. Glendale's growth was spurred by the arrival of the Los Angeles Interurban Railway in 1904 which connected it to downtown Los Angeles. In the 1920s, Glendale became home to many of the movie studios and stars looking to escape the growing Hollywood scene. Some of the historic architecture from Glendale's early days still exists today.
