Fullerton has grown rapidly in recent decades. In 1970, the population was only 95,738. By 1980 it had grown to 114,144 and in 1990 it was 126,003. The population exceeded 130,000 in the 2000 census.

History

Fullerton was founded in 1887 by George and Edward Amerige and named for George H. Fullerton, who secured the land on behalf of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway. Fullerton was incorporated in 1904 with a population of approximately 1600 people.

Like other cities in Orange County, Fullerton benefitted from the post-World War II population and economic boom in Southern California. The growth of the aerospace and technology industries provided employment opportunities that attracted new residents. Cultural events like the Fullerton College Jazz Festival also began in the 20th century.

The Fullerton Arboretum is a 26-acre botanical garden with collections of tropical, temperate, and desert plants.
