History of Encinitas

The area that is now known as Encinitas was originally inhabited by the Kumeyaay Native Americans. Europeans first landed in the area in the late 1700s. The town was incorporated in 1986 and named after the Spanish name “Encina,” meaning evergreen oak.

One of the first landmarks built in modern-day Encinitas was the iconic Moonlight Beach bathhouse, constructed in the 1940s. During the 1880s, the California Southern Railroad came through the area, establishing the community of New Encinitas. In the 1880s, a resort town named Hotel Encinitas was incorporated.
