Once a small agricultural town, El Monte has transformed into a diverse suburban city over the past century. This article provides an overview of El Monte's history, population, economy, landmarks, and local resources.

History of El Monte

The area that is now El Monte was originally inhabited by the Tongva people for thousands of years. The first Europeans arrived in 1769 with the Spanish Portola expedition. In 1810, the Spanish governor of California awarded the Rancho El Monte Mexican land grant to one of the expedition's soldiers. The rancho served as an agricultural outpost into the 1840s.

In 1849 after California became part of the United States, American settlers began arriving in greater numbers. El Monte was founded in 1852. Agriculture, especially citrus growing, drove the local economy. In the 1870s the Southern Pacific railroad was built through town, spurring growth. El Monte was incorporated as a municipality in 1912.

In the mid 20th century, El Monte's population boomed as the suburbanization of Los Angeles led to rapid residential development. The completion of the I-10 freeway linked El Monte to Los Angeles. The city evolved into a commuter suburb while retaining agricultural land on its outskirts. Today's El Monte retains its diversity as a Hispanic-majority working class community.
