El Centro was founded in 1906. The city was born out of the Imperial Land Company’s desire to develop extensive irrigation and water-delivery systems within the Imperial Valley for large scale agricultural use. El Centro was incorporated on April 16, 1908.

The name El Centro comes from the Spanish words meaning “The Center” due to its central location within the Imperial Valley. The city served as the center of social and business life for the surrounding agricultural region.

Agriculture fueled El Centro’s early growth and development. Lettuce became a major crop, supplanted later by citrus fruits, cantaloupes, carrots, cotton, and grain. Currently, El Centro is the commercial center for the Imperial Valley's agricultural economy.
