History

El Cajon was first settled in the 1860s by farmers and ranchers. The name El Cajon means "the box" or "the drawer" in Spanish, describing the valley's shape. In the early 20th century, El Cajon became known for poultry ranching and dairy farming. After World War II, the city grew rapidly as war veterans settled in the area.
