East Los Angeles is an unincorporated area and census-designated place in Los Angeles County, California. With a population of 126,496 as of the 2010 census, East Los Angeles is the most populous unincorporated area and census-designated place in the United States.

History

East Los Angeles has a long history going back to the original Spanish colonization of California. It was part of the Mexican land grants given to early settlers during the Spanish and Mexican periods. After the Mexican-American War, it became part of the United States. The expansion of the intercontinental railway and the discovery of oil brought many new residents to East Los Angeles in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

As of the 2020 census, East Los Angeles had a population of 131,118. It is one of the most densely populated and youthful areas of Los Angeles County. About 95% of residents are Hispanic/Latino. The major ancestries are Mexican (87.4%), Salvadoran (0.8%), and Guatemalan (0.7%).

The median household income in East Los Angeles is $37,982, which is lower than the county median of $61,015. About 22.4% of residents live below the poverty line.
