History and Origins

The area now known as Danville originally belonged to the indigenous Ohlone people. Spanish missionaries and Mexican ranchers later inhabited the region which was part of Mission San Jose and Rancho San Ramon land grants. Americans began settling the valley in the 1850s.

Danville was originally called Tassajara, after an Ohlone settlement along San Ramon Creek. The town was later renamed Danville in 1857 after Danville, Illinois, the hometown of early resident William M. Danford. Another early settler, Eugene Sheridan Montgomery, is considered the father of Danville as he built numerous businesses and helped establish the town.

Danville continued to grow as an agricultural community known for farms, ranches, and orchards. The Southern Pacific Railroad established a station in 1891, connecting Danville to the San Francisco Bay. After World War II, Danville transitioned to a residential commuter town as the population increased.

Danville was incorporated in 1982 in order to gain local control over land use and growth decisions. Since then, Danville has developed into a prosperous suburban community with a vibrant downtown, ample public services, and highly ranked schools.
