History

The area was originally home to the indigenous Tongva people. Spanish explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo first arrived in 1542 and named the rocky outcrop "Capistrano". In the 1830s, the area was part of Rancho Boca de la Playa, a Mexican land grant owned by Juan Avila. It was later purchased by millionaire businessman George S. Doheny in 1931, who developed Capistrano Beach. The area became known as Dana Point in 1969 and officially incorporated as a city in 1989.
