History of Culver City

Culver City was founded by Harry Culver in 1913. Harry Culver was a real estate developer from Nebraska who purchased the land that would become Culver City in 1913 for $500 an acre. He built the Hotel Hunt, named after Harrison Hunt, his advertising partner, and promoted Culver City with the slogan "All Roads Lead to Culver City". This was a nod to the city's location near important transportation routes.

The first film studio in Culver City opened in 1918. During the 1920s, many major silent movie companies had studios in Culver City, including MGM, Hal Roach Studios and Thomas Ince Studios. Culver City became known as the "Heart of Screenland" during this time. Today, Sony Pictures Entertainment is headquartered in Culver City.
