Concord is a city located in Contra Costa County in the U.S. state of California. As of 2019, Concord had an estimated population of 129,295, making it the largest city in Contra Costa County. Concord is located approximately 29 miles northeast of downtown San Francisco.

History

The area around what is now Concord was originally inhabited by the Bay Miwok people for thousands of years before Europeans arrived in the area. The first European land exploration of the area was a Spanish expedition led by Captain Luis Arguello in 1820.

In 1834, the Mexican government granted the 17,921-acre Rancho Monte del Diablo to Salvio Pacheco. The name Monte del Diablo means "Mount of the Devil" in Spanish. Monte del Diablo is still used to refer to the prominent ridge along the city's western border, though its elevation is only 2,517 feet (767 m).

In the late 19th century, a railroad was built connecting Concord and Marysville, bringing many new settlers to the area. The town of Todos Santos was established by Salvio Pacheco in the 1860s, and a post office opened there in 1868. However, the town failed to thrive and the area remained primarily agricultural.

In 1905, the area was renamed Concord to avoid confusion with the Southern California town of Todos Santos. "Concord" was chosen to reflect the peaceful cooperation between the two major landowners who decided to jointly donate land for a new town.

Concord was incorporated as a city on February 5, 1905. Over the next decades, Concord developed into a primarily middle-class suburb. The naval weapons station in the nearby town of Port Chicago also provided many jobs. During World War II, the area played a major role in supplying ammunition and explosives to the war effort.

The population of Concord grew rapidly in the decades after the war, increasing from around 1,500 in 1940 to over 50,000 by 1970. Growth slowed in the 1970s but continued at a steady pace in later decades.
