Compton is a city located in southern Los Angeles County, California. With a population of over 95,000 as of 2020, it is one of the oldest cities in the county. Compton has a rich history and culture and is known as the birthplace of west coast hip hop and gangsta rap.

History

Compton was founded in 1867 by a group of pioneering families, including Griffith D. Compton, after whom the city was named. It was one of the first communities in Southern California to be established after California gained statehood. [1] The city was incorporated in 1888.

During the first half of the 20th century, Compton grew rapidly due to its proximity to Los Angeles and became a suburban city known for its middle-class residents, parks, and recreation centers. It thrived with jobs in the aircraft and automotive industries. [1] However, in the 1950s and 60s, Compton suffered from high unemployment rates and gang violence as families moved to the suburbs. This period inspired the "Compton's Most Wanted" era of west coast hip hop.

Today, Compton is working to rebuild its economy and reputation. While challenges still remain, there is a growing pride in the city's unique history and identity.
