Claremont is a city in eastern Los Angeles County, California, United States, located about 30 miles east of downtown Los Angeles at the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains. Known as the "City of Trees and PhDs", it is home to 7 colleges and universities including the Claremont Colleges and has a population of around 35,000 residents.

History

Claremont was incorporated as a city in 1907. The city's origins lie in the Rancho San Jose land grant issued to Antonio Maria Lugo in 1839 by Mexican governor Juan Alvarado. The Rancho San Jose encompassed present-day Claremont and much of the Pomona Valley. In the 1860s, local citizens founded the small town of Clarement, which would later become Claremont.

The city got its name from Claremont College, the first of the seven Claremont Colleges which were modeled after England's Oxford University. The college was founded in 1887 and heavily shaped Claremont's development patterns. Many of the city's early structures remain preserved in its historic downtown "The Village" district.
