History

The area that is now Cerritos was originally inhabited by the Tongva Native Americans. The first European settlement came in the late 18th century when Spanish settlers were given land grants in the region by the Spanish crown. The Rancho Los Nietos and Rancho Los Coyotes grants covered parts of what is now Cerritos.

In the 19th century, the land that is now Cerritos was used for cattle grazing and dairy farming. The town began to develop in the 1950s and 60s as suburban residential neighborhoods and commercial development expanded in the Los Angeles area. Cerritos was incorporated as a city in April 1956.

The name Cerritos comes from the Spanish word "cerritos" meaning little hills. This was in reference to the knolls and rises that intersect the Los Angeles coastal plain in the area.
