History

The Cahuilla Indians were the original inhabitants of the land that later became Cathedral City. White settlers began arriving in the late 1800s, and the town site was laid out in 1925 by engineer George Herz. The new community initially went by the name "Big Spring," but was later renamed Cathedral City due to the mountain peaks visible from town resembling grand cathedral spires.

Cathedral City was officially incorporated in 1981, with local legend Sonny Bono serving as the city's first mayor. Agriculture and tourism have traditionally been mainstays of the local economy. However, Cathedral City has diversified in recent decades and now has a strong retail and entertainment presence as well.
