Castro Valley is a census-designated place (CDP) in Alameda County, California, United States. The population was 61,388 at the 2010 census. Castro Valley is named after Don Guillermo Castro, who was a soldier in the Mexican army and a rancher.

Population

According to the 2010 US Census, Castro Valley had a population of 61,388 people. The racial makeup of Castro Valley was 38.7% White, 4.0% African American, 0.2% Native American, 21.4% Asian, 0.7% Pacific Islander, 27.2% from other races, and 7.8% from two or more races. 53.8% of the population was Hispanic or Latino of any race.

History

The earliest inhabitants of Castro Valley were the Ohlone people. In 1772, the first European land exploration of Castro Valley and surrounding areas was led by Don Gaspar de Portolá. The area was part of the largest land grant in Alameda County, the Rancho San Lorenzo granted to Guillermo Castro in 1841. The modern history of Castro Valley began in the late 19th century.
