History

The early history of what is now Carson dates back to the Native American Tongva tribe, who inhabited the Los Angeles Basin for thousands of years prior to Spanish colonization. The first European land exploration of California included the Pedro Fages expedition, which passed through the Carson area in 1769 and again in 1770.

In the 19th century, the Rancho Sausal Redondo land grant encompassed much of what is now Carson. The city itself was founded in 1968, when the neighboring cities of Dominguez Hills, Torrance, Gardena, and Wilmington incorporated into one larger municipality known as Carson.

The city was named after George Henry Carson, a pioneer in California's water and electricity development. As the area became more populated over the 20th century, the economy shifted from agriculture to manufacturing, aerospace, and services.
