Calexico is a city in Imperial County, California, United States. The population was 40,963 at the 2020 census. Calexico is about 122 miles (196 km) east of San Diego and 62 miles (100 km) west of Yuma, Arizona. The name of the city is a portmanteau of California and Mexico, which represents the city's proximity to the International Border between the U.S. state of California and Mexico.

History

Calexico began as a tent city location on the Imperial Land Company’s property in 1899. Imperial Land Company was a subsidiary of the California Development Company. The tent city would eventually develop into a town called Silsbee. In 1902, Silsbee was renamed Calexico, a portmanteau of California and Mexico. The name was conceived to recognize the proximity of Mexicali, Baja California, Mexico on the other side of the international border.

According to the 2020 census, the population of Calexico was 40,963. Calexico is the 16th largest city in the Imperial Valley and the 278th largest city in California. The racial makeup of Calexico was 33,571 (82.0%) White, 112 (0.3%) African American, 561 (1.4%) Native American, 805 (2.0%) Asian, 32 (0.1%) Pacific Islander, 5,908 (14.4%) from other races, and 1,974 (4.8%) from two or more races.
