History of Burbank

Burbank's recorded history began in 1790 when the area that is now Burbank was part of the Spanish land grant Rancho San Rafael. In 1867, Dr. David Burbank, an American dentist, purchased over 4,600 acres of the former ranch lands and established a sheep ranch. The city began in 1887 when 160 acres near the railroad depot were purchased and subdivided into lots. The town was named Burbank in honor of Dr. Burbank and incorporated as a city in 1911 with a population of 1,385.

Burbank's early history and subsequent growth was closely tied to the railroad and the entertainment industry. In the 1920s major facilities were built for Warner Bros and several other movie studios. Walt Disney opened his studios in Burbank in 1939. This established Burbank as the media capital of the West Coast.
