History

The area that is now Brentwood was originally inhabited by the indigenous Bay Miwok people for thousands of years before Spanish explorers arrived in the late 1700s. In 1834, John Marsh obtained a Mexican land grant for Rancho Los Meganos covering the Brentwood area. Marsh allowed local farmers to manage livestock on the Rancho. During the California Gold Rush, the local farmers prospered selling produce to miners on their way to the gold fields.

The town of Brentwood was established in the late 1800s by Canadian physician Dr. John Marsh. Settlers were drawn to the area by the fertile soil and mild climate. Agriculture, especially cherries, corn and peaches, drove the local economy. In 1948, the John Marsh Home was designated a National Historic Landmark.

The city of Brentwood was incorporated in 1948. Rapid suburban residential development began in the late 1900s as the wider Bay Area expanded eastward, transforming Brentwood from a small town into a bedroom community. Several well-known companies are headquartered in Brentwood, notably Nob Hill Foods grocery chain.
