History

The Tongva tribe inhabited the Los Angeles Basin, including the Arcadia area, for over 8,000 years prior to the arrival of the Spanish. In 1821 after Mexico's War of Independence from Spain, Rancho Santa Anita was one of the first ranchos in California to be granted by the new Mexican government. The rancho consisted of 37,000 acres and changed owners multiple times before being acquired by lucky Baldwin in 1875. Baldwin oversaw the development of the city, planting orchards of many varieties of fruit trees on the slopes of the foothills. The city was officially incorporated in 1903 and named after Arcadia, Greece due to its pastoral setting.
