Alhambra is a city in the San Gabriel Valley region of Los Angeles County, California. As of the 2020 census, the population of Alhambra was 85,869 making it one of the larger and more populous cities in the county.

History of Alhambra

The land that Alhambra now occupies was originally inhabited by the Tongva Native Americans. The San Gabriel Mission was founded nearby in 1771, bringing Spanish settlers to the area. The original name of Alhambra was “El Pueblo de la Reina de los Ángeles” meaning “The Town of the Queen of the Angels.”

In 1843, Benjamin Davis Wilson arrived and purchased the land that would later become Alhambra. He named it after the Alhambra palace in Granada, Spain. Alhambra was incorporated as a city in 1903. In the 1920s, Alhambra experienced significant growth as new workers arrived looking for jobs in the growing industries of Los Angeles.
