Pine Bluff is a city located in Jefferson County in the state of Arkansas. According to the Wikipedia page for Pine Bluff, the city had a population of 42,271 as of the 2020 census making it the tenth largest city in Arkansas. Pine Bluff is known as "The Gateway to the Delta" due to its location on the Arkansas River in the Arkansas Delta region.

History

The Pine Bluff area was first settled by Europeans in 1819 when Joseph Bonne and his family settled on a homestead along the Arkansas River. In 1829 Thomas Phillips claimed a half section of land where Pine Bluff is currently located. Jefferson County was established by the Arkansas Territorial Legislature in 1834 and Pine Bluff was incorporated as a city in 1839.

Cotton was a major part of the early economy in Pine Bluff. With river access and railroads, Pine Bluff became an important cotton shipment port. The expansion of the railroad system in the late 19th century transformed Pine Bluff into a hub for the cotton trade. During the Civil War, Pine Bluff was occupied by Union troops and served as a supply base for Union forces on the Mississippi River.

Pine Bluff saw growth in the late 19th and early 20th centuries with the expansion of lumbering and paper mills. The city built new public schools and opened a public library. The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff was established in 1873 and Arkansas AM&N College (now the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff) opened in 1927, making Pine Bluff an educational hub.
