History

The area was first explored by French from Louisiana in 1722. It was named La Petite Roche (The Little Rock) by explorer Jean-Baptiste Bénard de la Harpe. The first permanent settlement was established in 1820 by William Lewis. Little Rock was incorporated as a town in 1831 and as a city in 1835.

During the late 1800s, Little Rock became a strategic western city on the frontier. By the turn of the century, it was the capital of the only southern state along the Mississippi River.

In 1957, a key event in the city's history took place - the Little Rock Nine crisis. This was when nine African American students were stopped from entering Little Rock Central High School in compliance with the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling that segregated public schools were unconstitutional. The crisis and its aftermath was a defining moment in the civil rights movement.
