History

Jonesboro was founded in 1859 and named after State Senator William A. Jones. It was originally built up around the St. Louis, Iron Mountain and Southern Railway. The city saw growth and development as a regional cotton, rice and soybean producing center. Jonesboro played a role in the Civil War as a strategic location along a major railroad.
