History

The Hot Springs area was inhabited by Native Americans for thousands of years prior to European settlement. They believed the hot springs had healing properties. The area was claimed by France as part of Louisiana before being acquired by the United States in 1803 as part of the Louisiana Purchase. Hot Springs was officially incorporated as a city in 1851.

In the late 1800s and early 1900s, Hot Springs became a popular vacation destination, with many elaborate bathhouses and spas built to take advantage of the area's natural hot springs. Businessmen and notorious gangsters like Al Capone traveled to Hot Springs to relax and gamble at the city's racetracks and casinos. This period gave rise to much of the city's vintage architecture and reputation as a tourist town. Read more on Wikipedia
